Undercurrent
Alexandra Palace - London, RDS - Dublin, Harrogate International Centre and The Art House, Wakefield.
2018/2019
Undercurrent was a yearlong project, in which we explored the stories past and present of the inland waterways, specifically Stanley Ferry, Wakefield.
Through facilitating guided walks, tours and skill sharing workshops we collected stories, followed leads and developed a brand new body of work which toured to Alexandra Palace - London, RDS - Dublin, Harrogate International Centre and The Art House, Wakefield.
This resulting exhibition, draws upon research and personal experience of the Aire & Calder navigation and its surrounding waterways. The show focuses on the physical and psychological tensions of the waterways that arise from a rich history, re-appropriation after economic decline to a leisure pursuit, and from the constant pressure, flow and strength of the water.
The exhibition also featured a publication; highlighting the roots of some of the work in the exhibition, industrial and social histories of Stanley Ferry and will two brand new poems from Phillip Dawson Hammond.
This project was kindly supported by Arts Council England and The Art House.
